William D.
Foltz
Oct 9, 1942 — Apr 4, 2025
Benton
William Douglass Foltz, a reader, scholar, and lover of classical music died suddenly on April 4, 2025. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Bill was born on October 9, 1942, in Alexandria, LA, where his mother and older brother were living while his father served in the European theater of WWII. Upon his father's return, the family moved to New York and later with a younger brother to Detroit, where Bill completed high school and entered the University of Michigan to study Classics. While in Ann Arbor, Bill was drafted into the Army and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant.
After service, at graduate school studying English Literature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he met his wife Mary Dugan, Benton, WI. After finishing his PhD, he took a tenured position at the University of Hawaii until his retirement. Back in Benton, he continued reading, focusing on the Benton Public Library and its efforts to build a new library-community center. Sadly, he did not live to attend the recent groundbreaking.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; a son, Alexander; a daughter, Emily; grandsons: River and Rylan; a brother, Robert, and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William.
