Walter L.
Schneider
Feb 14, 1941 — Sep 25, 2024
Platteville
Walter L. Schneider, 83, of Platteville, WI, passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at St. Dominic Villa in Hazel Green, WI. All are welcome to a memorial service with military honors accorded at 1:00 p.m. and potluck to be held on Saturday, November 30th from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the Wilson Family Farm (10950 South Galena Rd, Cuba City, WI 53807). The Haudenshield Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family.
Walt was born February 14, 1941 in Monroe, WI, the son of Walter E. and Ann I. (Johnson) Schneider. He was a graduate of Monroe High School and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. He served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1956. Stubborn in his principles and fiercely independent, Walt approached life on his own terms. Days were filled with gardening, fishing, gathering morels, cutting wood, or chasing the Wilson and Ferrin kids as they got up to their usual mischief. He could be found growing the most delicious tomatoes, cooking chili, or canning until the early hours of the morning, often remarking that "it was cooler then." We will dearly miss his annual reminders to check out the Perseid meteor showers or some other amazing cosmic viewing, that as kids we would sit in lawn chairs watching until all hours of the night.
Walt was an ardent supporter of local sports and women's athletics. Often to the chagrin of coaches, Walt would tote in buckets of his favorite candy and sugar treats for the teams, and if the players requested sunflower seeds to chew on, they could expect literal buckets of them at the next game. He thoroughly enjoyed giving to others and though he had little means, he gave regularly to countless charities that supported education and lifting up those with even less.
He was preceded in death by his mother on September 25, 2009, and his father, both of Monroe, WI.
He is survived by his brother, Jerry E Schneider of Fredericksburg, VA, and close family, Christopher (Amy) Wilson of Platteville, WI, Kaila (Brett) Wilson of Brooklyn, NY, and Brett Wilson of St. Paul, MN.
"I would rather sit on a pumpkin, and have it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion." — Henry David Thoreau
In lieu of plants & flowers, a Walter L. Schneider Memorial Fund has been established.
