Merlin H. Burbach, 90, of Cuba City, WI passed away on Thursday, August30, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque, IA. Services will be at 10:30am on Tuesday, September 4th, at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Cuba City, WI with Father David Flanagan officiating. Burial will be at the St. Rose Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded. Friends may call on Monday, September 3rd from 4pm-7pm at the Haudenshield Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Cuba City, WI and on Tuesday from 9:30am till time of service at the church. Rosary will be Monday at 3:45pm at the funeral home. Merlin was born on July 19, 1922, to Frank & Josie (Pickle) Burbach in Smeltzer Township, WI. Merlin served in the Army during WWII and was stationed at a Military Hospital near London in 1943.He then transferred to the Quarter Master Service and was stationed at a forward supply base in the Ardennes Forrest in France and participated in the Battle of the Bulge and, was honorably discharged at the end of World War II. Merlin reminisced often about his time spent in Europe. Upon returning home he then met Elsie Kaiser and they were married on September1, 1948 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sinsinawa, WI. Merlin and Elsie farmed for 25 years in the Cuba City area. Upon selling the family farm in 1973, he was employed in several jobs in the Cuba City area and also worked until 2010 helping his oldest son David in his business and his younger son Mark on his family farm. Merlin was an avid card player (4 in the middle), enjoyed wood cutting, and was very proud of his huge garden that he and Elsie tended to. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, family and friends. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Merlin is survived by his wife, Elsie; 2 sons: David (fiancé Cheryl Huggins) of Platteville, WI; and Mark(Jo) of Gays Mills, WI; a brother, Paul (Mary) Burbach of Cuba City, WI; 6 grandchildren: Amy (Dennis) Crooks, Sarah (Mike) Weigel, Andy (Michelle) Burbach, Lorna (Tyler) Olson, Luke Burbach, and Adam Burbach;11 great grandchildren, along with nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, John Burbach SR. and a nephew John Burbach JR.
