Grace R. Banfield, 81, of Cuba City, passed away on Monday June 14, 2010 at home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 18, 2010 at St. Rose Catholic Church in Cuba City, with Father David Flanagan officiating. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday June 17 at the Haudenshield Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Cuba City, WI, and on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at the church. A private family burial will be held at the St. Rose Cemetery at a later date.
Grace was born on March 12, 1929 to Henry & Katherine (Andrews) Duncan in Hazel Green, WI. She attended Buncombe Grade School, Cuba City High School, and Bayless Business College. On August 14, 1948 she married Louis Banfield at St. Rose Catholic Church in Cuba City. Through the years Grace worked as a nurse's aide, a school bus driver, and as an office manager. To date she has been the only woman Mayor of Cuba City, serving from 1978 to 1980. She was a member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary Club, the Red Hat Society, and St. Rose Catholic Church. She enjoyed time spent with family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was known and loved for her unique sense of humor and quick wit.
Grace is survived by her husband Louis Banfield; four daughters: Margie (Steve) Bernhardt, Paula Banfield, Elisa (George) Eigenberger, Cindy (Scott) Garrison; two sons: Tim (Mary) Banfield, and Dave (Anna) Banfield; 13 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son, Daniel, her parents, four sisters and one brother.
In lieu of flowers a Grace R. Banfield Memorial Fund has been established.
The family would like to thank Dr. Ramabadran, the 3 West Nursing staff at Mercy Hospital, Father Dave Flanagan, and Hospice of Dubuque for their care and support.
