Hazel Green

Obituary

As the person writing this obituary, I read the eulogies often in the Sunday paper. I am always amazed how a person's life is summarized in a few short paragraphs. Some traveled the world extensively, others held prominent positions in their careers. Our Mom did neither, but she was the best Mom we could ask for. She was the protector, listener, and referee in the household.

A private family service will be held. The Haudenshield Funeral Home and Crematory in Cuba City, WI is assisting the family with arrangements.

Ellyn (Bohn) Lee, 86, of Hazel Green, passed on October 21, 2026, at Agrace Hospice Care in Madison WI. Ellyn was born September 22, 1939, in Hillsboro WI to Richard and Christine Bohn. Ellyn wed Stan Lee, who preceded her in death, on August 19, 1961. In true Mom fashion, she gave family members an opportunity to say their goodbyes before taking her last breath.

As you may or may not know, Mom was a twin. She was the "younger" sister to Evelyn who was born seven minutes before her. We appreciate Evelyn's support through this mourning period and know she is suffering also.

Ellyn graduated from the University of Wisconsin Platteville in 1969 with a degree in Education. She taught several years in Hazel Green. My brothers and I were fortunate, or unfortunate, depending how you look at it, to have our Mom as a substitute teacher. I remember kids saying to me, "your Mom yelled at me" and never knowing how to respond. Now as an adult, I would say be respectful and listen. Teaching is the underappreciated profession.

Ellyn was a great cook and baker. Her cinnamon rolls were LEGENDARY at church auctions taking top dollars. She also made a mean pasty that was often a Sunday dinner meal. Her favorite son in law, inside joke since he was the only one, would always ask if there was any ice cream dessert on visits. It always gave Mom a good laugh.

Ellyn loved her dogs to the end and was always sad to see one cross the golden bridge. When one pet left the Lee household, a new dog would be adopted weeks later even though Mom would say no more. Dogs were her constant companionship throughout the years.

Ellyn is survived by her three children: Richard, Jayne, and Duane and their families, six grandchildren, one great grandchild, and her sister, Evelyn Marquardt. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

There is a reason dementia is called "the long goodbye." It robs the survivors of the person they once knew. Recollections, names, and people are often removed from the individual's memory. For Mom, an English teacher, she lost her ability to communicate. Imagine not being able to have a conversation with your parent. This is a terrible disease that affects millions.

The family extends their gratitude to the Skaalen staff who cared for Mom over the years.

In lieu of flowers or monetary donations to the family, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer Association, www.alzfdn.org in Ellyn Lee's name.
