Obituary

Eldon C. Updike, 85, of Cuba City, WI passed away on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at Southwest Health Center in Platteville, WI. Services will be at 11am on Wednesday, June 11th at the United Methodist Church in Cuba City, WI, with Pastor Dan Verdegan officiating. A private family burial will be held at a later date at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Cuba City, WI. Friends may call from 4-8pm on Tuesday, June 10th at the Haudenshield Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Cuba City, WI and on Wednesday, June 11th from 10am until time of service at the church. Eldon was born on Aug. 2, 1928 in Hickory Grove Township, Grant County, WI to Fred & Olivia (Walker) Updike. He married his lifelong partner, Marlene Moran on April 18, 1949 at the Methodist Church in Boscobel, WI. He worked at the home farm with his brother, Mahlon until moving to Boscobel to do auctioneering in the state. His wife, Marlene cashiered many of the auctions. In 1959, he and Marlene joined the United Farm Agency, a nationwide real estate firm and later Eldon became state manager, which he did for 18yrs. On April 1, 1966 they moved to Cuba City, WI and remained with United Farm Agency and also did auctioneering. He was a partner with his brother, Donald in auctioneering for over 30yrs. They conducted over 4,000 auctions. After Donald's death, he worked with Doug Wedge of Boscobel, WI. They moved to Las Vegas in 1989 where they started their own mobile home sales company and ran it for several years. They moved back to Cuba City, WI in 2003 and semi-retired, managing an apartment complex for seniors, where they lived. He also helped his nephew, Stan Updike with some auctions. He was a great sports fan of Wisconsin Badgers and Green Bay Packers. He loved country music, his favorite singer was Ernest Tubb from Nashville, TN who sang and played for his & Marlene's 25th wedding anniversary in 1974. His greatest pleasures were his children, grandchildren and his great grandchildren. He also enjoyed fishing, playing cards and Bingo. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Eldon is survived by 3 children: Edward John (Carol) Updike, Lila Jean (Tom) Lilley, both of Cuba City, WI and Eldon John (Amy) Updike of Las Vegas, NV; 8 grandchildren; 16, great grandchildren; a brother, Mahlon (Sandy) Updike of Boscobel, WI; 3 sisters: Arlene Beerkircher of Dodgeville, WI, Leota Rust and Lulabelle (John) Rice, both of Marshfield, WI, along with nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Marlene (Sept. 7, 2012), 4 brothers: Donald, Dale, Ivan and Dorland; 3 sisters: Alto, Nelda and Irma. In lieu of flowers an Eldon C. Updike Memorial Fund has been established.
