David Howard Mullen, 63, passed away on September 28, 2024, at his life-long home in southwest Wisconsin. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 5th at the First Baptist Church in Darlington, WI, with Pastor Nick McElrath officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Shullsburg, WI. Family and friends may call on Friday, October 4th from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Darlington, WI; also on Saturday, October 5th from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church. The Haudenshield Funeral Home & Crematory in Cuba City, WI is serving the family.
Born on July 23, 1961, to Howard and Beryle Mullen, David was the youngest of three siblings raised on the family farm outside of Shullsburg. He was a 1979 graduate of Shullsburg High School and began working at the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department in 1982. He rose to the level of Corporal and served the residents of Lafayette County until his passing. He was known for his fairness, calm demeanor, and no-nonsense approach. He was down-to-earth and approachable to his colleagues and the public he served. No stranger to hard work, David also managed the family farm. His nieces and nephew fondly remember spending weekends with David and their grandparents on the farm, playing in the pastures, falling in the creeks, and exploring old mines. If you saw David, you probably also saw a loyal blue heeler, likely named Dingo or Peeper, who was keeping watch. David was a meat-and-potatoes kind of guy, and he always enjoyed a good dinner at one of the local supper clubs. He was well known throughout Lafayette County.
David is survived by his brother, Ron Mullen (Deb Hanten), a sister, Kay (Bob) Martin, 4 nieces: Jessica Mullen, Sarah Mullen, Jaclyn Mullen, and Kalli Washburn, a nephew, Nathan Martin, many wonderful cousins, and five great-nieces/nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Beryle Mullen, grandparents, Clyde and Eulalia Mullen and Louis and Zula Genthe, 3 aunts: Rena Amacher, Katharine Gray, and Marian Ragonese, an uncle, Clyde Mullen, and sister-in-law, Donna Mullen.
In lieu of plants and flowers, a David H. Mullen Memorial Fund has been established.
