Tony was born on February 28, 1941, to Martin Leo and Mary L. (Picray) Hughes in Monticello, IA. He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1962 and was honorably discharged. During that time, he met the love of his life, Shirley Ann Roling. They were married on September 29, 1962, in LaMotte, IA, and began their life together in Maquoketa. They were married for 47 years. In Maquoketa, Tony and Shirley started Hughes Body Shop and Wrecker Service. Tony, Shirley, and their three children, Paula, Penny, and Mark, later moved to Thousand Oaks, CA, where he restored classic cars from his garage for ten years before eventually resettling in Cuba City, WI. There, he continued the work he loved most: bringing classic cars back to life with remarkable patience, precision, and craftsmanship. Tony was known for his attention to detail, his skill in car restoration, and the pride he took in every project. He enjoyed going to and judging car shows, buying and selling at swap meets, motorcycle rides, watching sports on TV, hosting a monthly Friday fish fry, and sharing stories that often began with "Remember when…" with his close friends. Tony had a generous heart and treasured his friendships deeply; if someone needed him, he was there. His close friend Gary "Curly" Deiter met him 35 years ago, and the two began a cherished tradition of happy hour every Tuesday and Friday in the shop. Most of all, Tony loved spending time with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.
Tony is survived by 2 daughters: Paula Hughes of Cuba City, WI & Penny (Mike) Dingman of Benton, WI; "bonus" son, Bill Marousis; 3 grandchildren of California: Courtney (Travis) Uslan, Kylie & Jake Appleford; 2 sisters: Sharon Kueter & Linda (Jerry) House; a sister-in-law, Virginia Hughes; his sweetheart, Shari Bruun; along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley (Sept 12, 2010), son, Mark (Aug. 21, 2009), his parents, 6 siblings: Mary Irene (Wayne) Claus, Charlene "Chuckie" (Pat) Cavanagh, Tom (Aletha) Hughes, Mick Hughes, M. Terese (Bill) Cavanagh & R. Michael "Big Mike" (Jean) Hughes; and a brother-in-law, Duane Kueter.
In lieu of plants & flowers, an Anthony "Tony" L. Hughes Memorial Fund has been established.
